Itinerary

Your aboriginal Guide, Victor Cooper, a Minitja man from Kakadu, will meet you at your hotel to commence your day experiencing some of Kakadu's highlights. Victor has spent most of his life here and today you will have the opportunity to learn a little of the rich cultural interaction between his people and their country.

We will travel north across the Magela floodplains and past some of the spectacular escarpment outliers to Ubirr, one of Kakadu's major aboriginal rock art sites. Here Victor will guide you through the natural stone galleries and give you an insight into the culture associated with some of these intriguing works of art. The art here spans a vast period, from ancient times before the sea level rose to its present level right through to interaction between Aboriginal people and early European visitors. You will see paintings of spirit characters and the famous x-ray art depicting the internal structure of some of the animals of this country.

Not far from Ubirr runs the East Alligator River, the border between Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Ginga, the Estuarine Crocodile is often seen in the river and many interesting birds inhabit the forest along its banks. A cool drink on the river bank will refresh you before we move south again.

Our next stop will be at the Bowali Visitor Centre where you can learn more about the vast lands of Kakadu and how they are jointly managed by the Traditional Owners in partnership with the Australian Government. You will also have time to visit the Marrawuddi Gallery where there is a range of local art work for sale along with books and photographs of the region.

Our journey takes us west from here to floodplains of the mighty South Alligator River. We'll visit the Mamukala wetlands where thousands of birds congregate in the drier months of the year. There is a bird hide that enables a good view across the entire floodplain but a guided walk around the edges will often reward us with sightings of the less common birds and other animals.

After some time exploring the edge of the floodplains we will return you to your accommodation at either South Alligator or Jabiru.

Note- seasonal variations to itinerary
When Ubirr is inaccessible during the wet season due to flooding we will visit Burrunggui (Nourlangie Rock).
